Idente Youth Hempstead hosted a movie night on Thursday, 13 August at 6pm. The movie selected for viewing was McFarland USA. McFarland, USA (also known as McFarland) is an American 2015 sports drama film directed by Niki Caro and produced by Walt Disney Pictures. Based on the true story of a 1987 cross country team from a predominantly Mexican-American high school, McFarland High School, in McFarland, California, the film stars Kevin Costner as Jim White, the school's coach, who leads the team to win a state championship. The film was released on February 20, 2015, received positive reviews from critics, and grossed over $44 million. IY Hempstead had group discussions at their following weekly meeting based on the lessons learnt from the movie. Below were the lessons used for the discussions Lesson#1: All things work together for good. (Coach White chose McFarland because he ran out of options however he ended up finding a beautiful community of Mexican immigrants) Lesson#2: Everyone matters…even your last place runner. (Danny Diaz, the slowest runner in team, won the state championship for McFarland) Lesson#3: Blessed because they’ve suffered. (The daily labour that the runners had to go through made them tough and strong) Lesson#4: Spending a day in their shoes, incarnate. (Coach White went out of his way to understand that runners by spending a day with them picking in the fields) © 2015 Idente Youth U.S.
